Kia Ora,

My name is Freya Finch (they/them) and you’re reading this on my website, thanks for visiting.

I’m a trans non-binary, Pākehā, Jewish artist and I live and work in Tāmaki Makaurau, Aotearoa.

I moved to Aotearoa when I was nine years old, with my family. We moved to the beautiful beach town of Mount Maunganui which was a great contrast from the cold Yorkshire town of Sheffield where I spent my early childhood years. I took to the beach lifestyle pretty quickly and I now have a love of surfing, swimming and summer.

My father’s side of the family comes from Scotland and my mothers side of the family comes from Poland. I am culturally Jewish and I have often incorporated Jewish rituals, customs and stories into the work I make.

I have always enjoyed making things and performing. As a child, I loved putting on plays with my friends and siblings. I feel privileged to be making my way as an artist and to have carried this childlike sense of play and curiosity into the work I do now.

I trained at The Melbourne John Bolton Theatre School in 2015. I was eighteen at the time, drifting around in life and felt pretty lost and purposeless. I came away from the school with a deeper sense of connection to the world around me and a renewed sense of commitment to art making.

Over the past eight years I have worked on a wide range of productions and projects as an actor, deviser, director and writer. I’ve had the privilege to work with some of New Zealand’s leading arts companies such as Silo Theatre Company, Auckland Theatre Company, Tāwhiri and Auckland Pride Festival. I’ve also had my hand in many independent, original, DIY works ranging from shows in travelling cars to extravagant theatrical dinner parties. You can view these works under Past Performances and Past Creations.

As a trans non-binary person I want to put trans narratives, voices and people at the centre of my work. I want to tell trans and queer stories that are bold, tender and authentic.

I love stories that hold both comedy and tragedy, stories that speak to the human condition. I also have a love for the surreal, the absurd and the nonsensical.

As well as my practices in theatre and film I am an avid cook and photographer; both of these passions inform my creative practice and you can see some of my work in this area on ‘the blog’.

I hope you’ll enjoy looking through my work and my website, created by the brilliant Sam Small

Ngā Mihi,
